THE ROLE OF FIDUCIARY ACCOUNTANTS IN FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND LITERACY

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the role of fiduciary accountants in enhancing financial education and literacy among the general population. The objectives are to assess the effectiveness of fiduciary accountants in delivering financial education, to explore their influence on individuals' financial decision-making, and to evaluate their impact on overall financial literacy rates. Utilizing a survey research design is justified as it enables the collection of comprehensive data from a diverse population, providing insights into the general perceptions and experiences related to fiduciary accountants. A sample size of 400 respondents was determined using Taro Yamane's formula for a population of approximately 200,000, ensuring a margin of error of 5%. The case study focuses on Lagos, given its status as Nigeria’s financial hub with a diverse population engaged in various economic activities. The reliability coefficient score of the survey instrument was 0.85, indicating high internal consistency. Findings reveal that fiduciary accountants play a significant role in improving financial literacy by providing accessible and practical financial education. Respondents reported increased confidence in managing personal finances and making informed financial decisions. The study recommends that fiduciary accountants should be integrated into community financial literacy programs and that policies should be developed to support their role in public financial education initiatives.
